Today is another big day in Devens DGC history. At 1pm Marc and Josh will open the brand new Hawks Nest Disc Golf shop just on the other side of the fence near The Hills hole 12 and The Generals hole 11.
210 West Main Street in Ayer.
Get on out there and show these guys your support!
The Wednesday Weekly returns on March 12th. Come get your
2014 bag tag and be ready to tee off by 4:15PM. This was once again the most popular
singles league in Massachusetts last year (nearly 1,500 golfers came out) and I
am aiming to make it bigger and better this year so come join the fun.
We use league as our primary fundraiser to help pay our yearly insurance bill.
We make it fun for all, so don't worry that you have to be an all-star to have
a good time. We group players into four groups based on skill/gender, so you'll
always be competing with someone about as good as you.
• Four player pools (A pool for players who average 58 and under, B pool for
players who average between 59-68, C pool for players who average 69+ and a
• A weekly cash payout, a cash CTP for each pool, an ace pot and a season long
points event. Lots of raffle prizes at end of the year including some big
• Buying a tag saves you $2/week. Visiting non-taggers can still play and get
in on the cash payout but can't compete for a tag.
• You must be a tag holder to collect the ace pot
• Wednesdays, starting March 12th
• Be ready to go at 4:15pm. Time will move up to 5:30pm according to sunset.
• Initial cost: $20 for 2014 tag
• We will do a skills challenge at the end of the night as soon as daylight
• CASUAL PLAY IS LIMITED TO “THE GENERAL” ON LEAGUE NIGHTS.
• No handicaps.
• One round of singles
• If you leave before tags are redistributed, get someone to grab it for you or
risk us losing it.
• Tags are in play for casual rounds and tournaments. Higher tag can challenge
a lower tag and under most circumstances, lower tag must accept.
• Ace pot rolls over each week. If there are no aces for 2014, half goes to the
course maintenance/insurance fund and half goes to the 2015 WW ace pot.
• Two CTPs, one for A pool and one for B/C/W pools.
• There will be an improved year-end Bag Tag Bonanza to end the season.
• Lots of raffle prizes at the Bag Tag Bonanza. Earn raffle
tickets by attending league, hitting an ace, winning the nightly CTP or winning
the nightly skills challenge. The more you play the better your chances of
Points Series Rules
• I will track points for each player & post the up to date standings on
this discussion thread
• A, B, C & W Pools will have separate standings
• 1st place in each pool gets 4 points
• 2nd place in each pool gets 3 points
• 3rd place in each pool gets 2 points
• Everyone else gets 1 point for playing
• If you move up a division at any point in the division 95%-60% of your
accumulated points will travel with you to the new pool. Percentage is lowed as
we go through the season. If you move down, full points are moved.
• Top 3 (or more) in points will win a cash prize at the end of the season.
• Other ways to gain a point - hit an ace/win the nightly CTP/win the skills
PDGA Round Ratings
Beginning in May we will do 10 weeks of PDGA rated league rounds. Your league
round will count towards your PDGA rating (if you are a current PDGA member).
If you are a new member make sure you get me your member #
On May 10th, women from all around the world will play two rounds of disc golf at their local participating Women's Global Event. Scores from the first two rounds of each participating tournament will be submitted by the individual tournament directors and rated by the PDGA. These round ratings will be totaled and averaged to determine the player's "Global Score." For the rounds to qualify, the event must include two rounds and have at least three ratings propagators playing on the same course layout each round for ratings to be calculated as accurately as possible. The Global Scores will be updated throughout the day to determine our Women’s Global Event Champions and the winner in each division will receive a memorable trophy. Our Devens community now has a bunch of great women and hopefully they can join this event and kick some butt. Our local event is being held at Maple Hill in Leicester, MA Good luck ladies!!

We knew it would happen eventually and now the day is almost here. This Saturday our two home teams face off against each other at Amesbury Pines DGC. This will be a pool play event and Team Devens is also going up against a solid Newton Hill team, TD2 will also face the Borderland Bombers on their quest for greatness!
One thing is for sure, this will be a fun day with lots of good friends. I'm sure a victory by either of us will feel a little bittersweet. Tee off is around 9 so bring your food to the hall and get checked in to your capt. when you arrive.
Wow, what a year it has been for Devens DGC! There were so many highlights in 2013 but none compare to the installation of our new 18 hole course. Together we built something special and as a small thank you to those who helped build the course we made a tag that we hope you will proudly display on your disc golf bag.
I should have these tags in hand shortly and I will start distributing right away on an "as I see you" basis.
Thank you again and I look forward to an excellent 2014!
The Devens lost and found is being held at Devens Pizza on Main Street in Ayer. This is the building behind "The Hill" hole 12 & "The General" hole 11. Next to where Killer B Disc Golf was. To get there, leave the course via Antietam Street. Make a right at the Parker School and a right on Main Street. Store is on the right. Tell Billy you have a disc in the lost and found and thank him for holding them by patronizing his store. You can also donate to the course to say thanks.
It is always a good idea to put as much info as possible on your disc. Full name, Phone # and email address.

Please note that this weekends work days will be condensed into Sunday only.
Collectively, we have absolutely killed it during our last three work weekends. It really has been amazing to see so many people working together to build something special. Since the baskets are in and the course is getting a lot of play we would like to take care of some of the safety concerns before the ground is really frozen!
On Sunday, we would like to complete the following:
1 - Create a level walking path along hole 2s fairway
2 - Create a level walking path along hole 3s fairway
3 - Build solid steps mid fairway on hole 5
4 - Build solid steps mid fairway on hole 8
5 - Build solid steps down from 11s tee
6 - Create a better path from hole 8s basket to hole 9s tee
Does anyone have a bladed weed whacker? We need to weed whack a path up the following fairways 6/9/13/14
Lots of pole sawing to do all over the course.
Some small cutting on certain holes -
Hole 9 we need to take out a small tree near the basket
We are going to cut all of the small stuff around hole 12s baskets within 30 feet
Brush dragging - EVERYWHERE (we should be doing this as we play our casual rounds as well)
On Sunday December 1st we ran a very loose tournament in which you played as many rounds as you wished and at your own leisure. We asked that you submit your scores on Facebook and while it turned out to be a pretty crappy day weather-wise we still got 17 people who submitted scores and at least another dozen or so people out there playing who didn't submit their scores..
Travis currently holds the official course record at a 62!
Travis Milem 62
Ned Eisenberg 64
Frank Strauss 65
John Buonsanto 65
Bradley Arnall 65
Bob Kulchuk 66 (dropped a 73 round)
Pete Nevius 66
Luke Adolph (dropped a 69 round)
Ken Gary 68
Bill Bertera 68
Taylor Maslowski 68
John Rodenhizer 68 (dropped a 75)
Phil Vilmorin 69
John Mucchiarone 69
Ken Marshall 70
Chris Mergemekes 73
Chuck (Tammaro?) 77
Ashley Tombey 79
We can run an official league round at some point over the winter because these scores will drop with drier weather!
Over the past two months a steady group of 20-30 dedicated golfers have been viciously chomping through the previously untouched woods adjacent to our original course "The Hill". Over the last two weeks Ken Gary and Josh St. Denis (along with a few helpers) have been quietly digging holes, installing sleeves, and as of yesterday 18 shiny new Discatchers are installed!
The result of everyone's hard work is a fantastic 18 hole disc golf course with decent natural tee pads. Devens DGC is proud to be the only disc golf course on the mainland of Massachusetts to have two separate courses on the same land.
Devens has made a name for itself for having probably the largest and most dedicated player base in our area. I'm proud to call Devens my home course and feel privileged to play with you guys and gals!
Some upcoming events on "The General":
Josh is running an informal doubles match on Thanksgiving morning @ 8am
On Sunday December 1st we will be running an informal singles event, who can set the initial course record? There is no entry fee and you can play as many rounds as you want during the day. Form your own group of 3/4 and start on hole 1. Have someone post your groups names/scores on Facebook after each round ends and I'll tally at the end of the day.
We will have another work weekend on December 7th and 8th in which will we do lots of pruning, some stairs, dragging of brush piles and other touch up work. Please come out if you can! Tee pads construction and installation will begin in the spring.
Ok Devens, another work weekend is before us. If we get done what we plan to do, we could see baskets in the ground real real soon. So clear your calendars and get rid of those well-worn excuses and come on out. Here is the plan:
Saturday – finish cutting in fairways on last 3½ fairways. The usual chainsaw people will be there (right?). Everyone else, work gloves and help clear debris off the fairways. We will meet at 9am to start. If you come later and want to meet us, early on you can follow the road below the current course hole 9. Later morning onward take the road left past current hole 6 and look to the left or downhill from hole 7 basket/8 tee.
We will also be clearing smaller brush areas on already cut holes after we finish clearing the new holes.
Sunday – Vic is arranging to bring in a wood chipper to process the woodpiles. Meet at 9 am to start. We need people to bring wheelbarrows, shovels and rakes to move woodchips to the pin areas. If you have these supplies, but need a way to get them to the course, please post and I hope those with pickup trucks can swing by. If we get done with piles on the new course, we may be able to chip on the current course to add woodchips below a number of worn basket areas (1,18, 10 would be great). This could really help out the current course so try to get out to help.
We will also be setting the new basket sleeves in the ground for the existing holes.
We also need some clearing of the high tree ceiling on hole 7. If anyone can climb and cut branches, we need you now. This work requires about 10 limbs that are too high for a pole saw to come down. Someone experienced is needed.
The weather is looking like it is going to cooperate. Look forward to seeing a lot of people this weekend. It may be the last large-scale work effort before this course is playable.
Well, the 2013 Bag Tag Bonanza and League Season is in the books! Thank
you to everyone who came out yesterday to celebrate a great year and
have some fun.
We had 45 players for the morning round and 26
stayed after lunch to play in a birdie race round. I apologize for the
franticness during lunch awards. It was a race against time with my
laptop battery and I lost.. I was in overdrive and definitely made some
mistakes along the way. I think everything worked out properly and I
appreciate your help squaring me away!
I am taking suggestions for the 2014 season and of course I hope to enhance the league in some way. Is it March 2014 yet?

Team Devens is set to take on a fantastic team from Bellamy Park in Dover, NH this Saturday! Last year, we played them at their home course to start our season and we managed a come from behind 1 point victory! They have added some really great players but so did we. I'm expecting a fierce match and I cannot wait to get started.
Course will be open for casual play but pretty crowded. It's probably a good idea to play the 14 holes of the new course on Saturday if you are coming out.
This past Sunday Team Devens 2 hosted the very strong Team Borderland in their very first team challenge match. Unfortunately, the end result was a loss but the local boys did put some decent points up on the board with lots of other very close matches! Keep at it guys!!
Congrats to Marc D, Dean O & Moe R for winning their singles matches and Chris/Aaron, Josh/Joe & Dean/Dave (they pushed) for winning their doubles matches!!
I read on the discussion boards that you guys put out a fantastic food spread, they were talking like "best ever" kind of stuff and they have been playing Team Challenge for a long time!
