League 8/14 Cooperation

On Wednesday 8/14, please arrive before 5:15 if at all possible. We will be having a quick presentation at that time and it would be great if everyone was there for it.

I know we like to have a little fun and drinks some beers responsibly and stuff but if that can be held off during this time that would be fantastic as well.

If you sign in early and head out to play a few holes please do come back to the parking lot at that time.

Thanks for your cooperation.

August 7th League Results

Another perfect night for league and we finally got back up to the high 50's for players, 57 to be exact! All sorts of excitement too!

To add to the excitement. Most of the people came within the last 10 minutes and what a puzzle everything turned out to be. I was short a tag but had some to substitute so I think it turned out OK. Let me know if you have 2 tags or some other oddity.

5 new players came out.

2 ACES! John Buonsanto hit hole 17 and Ned Eisenberg hit hole 9. Nice shots! They split $124 bucks.

A couple of personal best scores too. Marc Duci (moving to A pool) shot a smoking 51 and Aaron Stewart shot a steady 55!

Only 8 tags left so grab yours before they are gone. You don't want to miss the end of the league tournament (and any end of the year payouts) because you didn't buy a tag, do ya?

We are selling Devens Tshirts for $20 and Hill Yeah Spring Classic Tournament Buzzzes for $15. Please support Devens Disc Golf & the sport in general. We are working on some great ways to make this additional fundraising money help to grow the sport. We have started our contributions by purchasing a basket for the NEW Otter Brook DGC in Keene, NH.

Thank you to all of you who have contributed to the new donation pipe, everyone has been very generous so far and each donation brings us closer to our future goals!

Local Player Spotlight: Scott Wilson

Watch out for Scott Wilson everyone!  He has been playing for only 3 months and has been steadily improving.

I played a round with Ken Gary and Scott tonight and Scott shot a 58 to beat his personal best by 3 strokes!

Keep it up!

Devens Tip Line

Just got a hot tip on the idiots who rolled our nice tables down the hill.

Someone was waiting in the parking lot for a buddy when 2 guys in their early 20s driving a late model gray pontiac grand am arrived and headed out onto the course to play. The friend arrived and they went out onto the course and they were about 3-4 holes behind the 2 young guys. They heard a loud crash and when they finished hole 9 they noticed what had happened. The people who rolled the tables were nowhere to be found and they think they played through 9 then rolled the tables on 10 and 13 on their way out.

Anyone know a disc golfer that fits this description? If so, maybe you can encourage them to come to a future workday so they can understand the amount of work that goes into a course for their enjoyment...

Random Stuff For This Week

A couple of items for this week:

A second Team Devens is currently forming. Tryouts are at league over the next 6 weeks. If you want on this team please come to league and make sure I know you want your rounds considered..  We will count 4 rounds out of the 6 so come to league often and play well!

A new course in Keene, NH needs our help. Courses don't build themselves and we should show some course pride by stepping up to help get this one off the ground. We will hopefully have plenty of course work of our own to do so join me this Saturday for some gratifying coursework at Otter Brook State Park.   devensdiscgolf@gmail.com if you have any questions

Mark your calendars for a few Devens Events -

Sunday October 13th..  Format TBD

Saturday November 9th... Annual Bag Tag Bonanza (for tag holders only, come to league and get your  tag now as there are only a handful left)

Workday - Otter Brook DGC in Keene, NH

What are you doing Saturday July 27th?

Please consider taking a trip out to Keene, NH. Rob Breckenridge and Derek Decoste have been busy putting in a sweet new DG course up there but they need some help. I'll have more details later but please set this date aside to help get this course in the ground faster. Our course and local players have been making a name for itself with a meticulously maintenance record, rapidly improving players, a solid team challenge team & a great league. Let's turn some heads with our willingness to help grow the sport as well. Who is with me?

Time to Establish Some Alternate Basket Positions!

Info from Ken:

We would like to establish some alternate hole configurations to add some variety to the course.  These alternate positions are currently marked on the course (orange ribbon on a stake) and we would like to solicit your opinions of the proposed new positions.  Please do not move the stakes, just give any opinions or recommendations.

After we complete the ten weeks of PDGA league we would like to test these new positions for a week or so.  They will not be permanent and we will go back to the original positions after a week or so.   Plenty of notice will be posted before the change.

Alt Hole Descriptions:

Hole 1:  Pin moved to left on the path to Hole 18
Hole 2:  Pin moved back and right in alcove to left of path from Hole 2 to Hole 3
Hole 3:  Pin moved to straight down road before road turns left
Hole 4:  Pin moved about 30 ft right and back slightly
Hole 5:  Pin moved back and right about 30 ft
Hole 6:  Hole moved back down the road past Hole 7 path
Hole 7:  Use right fairway
Hole 8:  Move pin back and right 30 ft
Hole 9:  Move pin right down the road to end of straight sight line
Hole 10:  Move pin down and left on side hill
Hole 11: Move pin in line with right fairway below 12 tee
Hole 12:  Move pin further down fairway across road
Hole 13:  Tee from right of road straight look to pin
Hole 14:  Move tee up hill right of big rock
Hole 15:  Move pin straight back 30 ft to trees
Hole 16:  Move pin left and back. Open fairway.
Hole 17:  Move pin to right of rocks on top of hill by path to 18

Looking forward to feedback.

Devens League is Going PDGA!

Starting on Wednesday, May 15th we will be running a PDGA league along with our normal league. You don't have to do anything extra or pay anything extra. We will be taking the 50 cents per player fee out of the $ that typically goes to the course.

If you are a current PDGA member you will get a rated round for each league rounds played during the 10 week period that this will run (ends mid July)

If you are not a PDGA member, that's OK too. You still play as usual. If you decide to join the PDGA, please let me know so I can get you credit for your rounds. http://www.pdga.com/join

You can view the current registration list:
http://www.pdga.com/tournament_results/104521/279077206

If your division or PDGA # is reported incorrectly, please let me know. If your name is not on this list, and you plan on playing please let me know. I can also just add your name in after the round is completed as well.

Workday - Monday May 6th

**** Call for Volunteers ****

All the recent use at Devens has clearly begun to wear out the stairs on 9 and 16. They need replacement. We are looking for a few volunteers to help. Josh + 3 will be there this Monday (5/6) at 5pm. If we get some more hands we can bang this out quickly. I have arranged for Rob to have materials on hand ready to go. We need a few more bodies. Who is in?

Design is 4' landscape timber drilled to place rebar inside the timber (no exposed re-bar). Need people/tools to set stair (shovel) and sink re-bar (sledge). I also want to place flat stone in front of the timber like we had on 9, so we may need a wheelbarrow to move some stone to 16.

Thanks to all our volunteers. Sorry for the short notice, but what I saw this week is that this cannot wait any longer.

"It's like a huge party every Wednesday!"

Come on out and join the fun like Moe! Just try to be a little classier =)

Devens League is a Huge Success!

If you have not heard about the Devens league, let me catch you up!

We are 7 weeks into league and we have had 292 players come out for some fun! Out of those 292 we have had 72 individual players join us and many of those 72 have been to all of the league nights so far.

For those players considering coming out for the first time please see the bottom of this post for the league fundamentals.

With the droves of people that come out to play, it is a real challenge to get everyone out on the course to their assigned holes. It is an even greater challenge to get all of the results completed and tags redistributed within a small amount of time so I am trying a few new things to help with the flow of the league.

I created a board made out of an old folding door.  The left side of the board will have hole 72 hole assignment cards semi-randomized on the board. The right side of the board will have 75 hooks.

When you sign in, still check in with me and I'll handle the money and the spreadsheet then move over to the board. Grab the next available hole assignment card, memorize your assigned hole and then place the card into a bin that will be somewhere near the board. Then take your tag and hang it on the matching #'d hook.

The card assignment part will help me to always know where we stand without having to count money and players from the spreadsheet 10x and we can avoid the hand distribution of cards as well. I'll completely randomize the top 10 easiest starting holes (keeping in mind course flow) so the first 40 people to show up will be ensured not to start on hole 8, etc. The last 32 cards will be put out based on need, mostly 3somes until the need for 4somes arises.

The tag hooks will eliminate the need for someone to have to re-number them at the end of the night.

We only have 8 tags left! Come and get em! Looks like another beauty on Wednesday.

Regarding the course closure during league. We will evaluate for another week or two and if we continue to have problems. We will indeed shut it down on Wednesday nights going forward. Thanks to everyone for their input, for spreading the word about league and casual play during league..

PLEASE ALSO NOTE THAT WE ONLY HAVE 8 TAGS LEFT FOR SALE AT THIS TIME.

League Fundamentals:
The Wednesday Weekly returns on March 13th. Come get your 2013 bag tag and be ready to go by 5:30 This was the most popular singles league in Massachusetts last year (nearly 1,000 golfers came out) and I am aiming to make it bigger and better this year so come join the fun.

We use league as our primary fundraiser to help pay our yearly insurance bill. We make it fun for all, so don't worry that you have to be an all-star to have a good time. We group players into three groups based on skill, so you'll always be competing with someone about as good as you.

Basics
• Three player pools (A pool for players who average 58 and under, B pool for players who average between 59-68 and C pool for players who average 69 and above).
• A weekly cash payout, a cash CTP for each pool, an ace pot and a season long points event.
• Buying a tag saves you $2/week. Visiting non-taggers can still play and get in on the cash payout but can't compete for a tag.
• You must be a tag holder to collect the ace pot
• Wednesdays, starting March 13th
• Be ready to go at 4:15. Time will move according to sunset.
• Initial cost: $20 for 2013 tag
• We will do a skills challenge at the end of the night as soon as daylight allows
• CASUAL PLAY IS DISCOURAGED DURING LEAGUE NIGHTS.

Weekly cost
• Tagholder: $5 -
$2 payout, $1 course funds, $.50 CTP, $.50 ace pot, $1 season points event & payout (during PDGA league that fee will come from this pot)

• Non-Tagholder: $7 -
$2 payout, $3 course funds, $.50 CTP, $.50 ace pot, $1 season points event & payout (during PDGA league that fee will come from this pot)

Details
• No handicaps.
• One round of singles
• If you leave before tags are redistributed, get someone to grab it for you or risk us losing it.
• Tags are in play for casual rounds and tournaments. Higher tag can challenge a lower tag and under most circumstances, lower tag must accept. All non-league tag exchanges MUST be reported to me by email - devensdiscgolf@gmail.com
• Ace pot rolls over each week. If there are no aces for 2013, half goes to the course maintenance/insurance fund and half goes to the 2014 WW ace pot.
• Two CTPs, one for A pool and one for B/C pool.
• There will be a year-end Bag Tag Bonanza to end the season.

Points Series Rules
• I will track points for each player & post the up to date standings on this discussion thread
• A, B & C Pools will have separate standings
• 1st place in each pool gets 4 points
• 2nd place in each pool gets 3 points
• 3rd place in each pool gets 2 points
• Everyone else gets 1 point for playing
• If you move up a division at any point in the division 80% of your accumulated points will travel with you to the new pool. If you move down, full points are moved.
• Top 3 (or more) in points will win a cash prize at the end of the season.
• Other ways to gain a point - hit an ace/win the nightly CTP/win the skills challenge

PDGA Round Ratings
At some point over the summer we will probably take advantage of a 12 week period where your league round will count towards your PDGA rating (if you are a current PDGA member). More info later on this.

We Have a Donation Box!

The Donation box is in!

Please support Devens Disc Golf by dropping some cash when you can! We promise to use the money to make your experience at the course better! We have some expansion plans in the works that we think you will all enjoy.

Big thanks to Eric Spring from Newton Hill for making this fine donation box and for the special team of Ken, Rob and I for putting it in. For the first time in Devens history we did not run into any rocks while digging the hole for this =)

We will empty the box on a regular basis and we also have security watching in case anyone attempts anything stupid. (Check above the red dot in the first picture and close up in the same spot in the next. Very well trained, he also watches for people who litter as well.

Thanks to Andy Duquette for the first donation!

The Hill Yeah Spring Classic Tournament is in the Books!

Thank you all so much for making our annual Spring NEFA points tournament - “The Hill Yeah Spring Classic” tournament such a success!  I had such a fun day and I hope that you all did as well! Scores were overall pretty high compared to past tournaments at the hill but I am going to attribute that to the wind!

Alex Gula drained the $128 ace pot on hole 9.

I hope you found it convenient to have Community Discs at the event to spend your funny money right there after awards. If you did not spend any or all of your funny money winnings you can also do so at http://communitydiscs.com/

I just submitted the Nefa points report as well. If you signed up for the event on the morning of the tournament and didn’t get your points for this tournament please let me know. It may take a while for the points to show up.

Pictures can be viewed on the devens disc golf facebook page. More photos and video coming soon! See ya next year.
