September Workdays Were a HUGE Success!

Our goal for this past weekend was pretty ambitious! We wanted to cut the fairways on 5 holes and sink the bucket targets on those 5. Thanks to the help of over 30 different people (some of whom came both days!) we crushed those 5 holes and cleared an additional 3 fairways. We also created some sweet temp tee boxes and put some logs in place to prevent future erosion.

As it stands right now, holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 15, 16, 17 & 18 are completely playable and a ton of fun! We will be tweaking small things over the next few weeks but we are extremely happy with how these turned out. 

NEXT WORK WEEKEND IS OCTOBER 19 & 20. Please set the date aside to help out again!

You can check the holes out yourself if you want! All of the cleared holes are par 3. 

Hole 1 begins next to hole 4 of the existing course. A new path has been cleared to this area by taking that right turn after the green fence on existing hole 1. Follow the raked path across the road on existing hole 3 and then up the hill behind existing hole 3s basket. The path to new hole 1 begins just to the right of existing hole 4s tee pad.  Its a relatively long walk to hole 1 but it is going to be worth it! 

Directional bricks are in place by the bucket targets on each hole and we tied trees with some ribbons to help follow the paths.

Hole 1 is a straight tunnel shot about 350, very slightly downhill

path to hole 2 is up the hill to the left of 1s bucket

Hole 2 is a 200 foot shot over a tricky gully. A few guardian trees to keep things interesting. Go long and you have a tricky comebacker and come up short for a tricky uphill putt. 

Path to hole 3 is down hill to the right

Hole 3 is a 280 foot lefty hyzer delight! Don't go long!

Path to hole 4 is just to the left of 3s bucket. Up the small hill and down the road a bit. Entrance is across road on the left. 

Hole 4 plays up a hill that drops off on the left. I think its about a 350 foot hole but that first shot needs to be placed well in order to get the 3. Any drives that come up short of the landing zone are in trouble!

Path to hole 15 plays up the road to the left. 

Hole 15 is a tight (maybe 280 uphill a bit) shot off the tee but if you can stay just to the right of the big tree but not too far over you could be left with a shot at birdie. Hit that tree and a 4 or worse is likely.

Path to hole 16 is sort of in line with the basket as you approach. 

Hole 16 is a short birdie hole (150ish)  BUTTTT Lay up and make your putt to get the two. Real easy to go long and it would be a fight to save a 3. Too short creates a daunting putt as well.

Path to hole 17 is just down the hill and up the road a bit. 

Hole 17 plays up the road for a bit then takes a left turn into the cleared area. Some guardian trees early. Basket is about 150 from the cleared left turn. Total length is around 300

Path to Hole 18 is to the left of the basket. Follow a winding path that is already slightly beaten in! 

Hole 18 has 2 fairways. A lefty hyzer or a righty hzyer. Pick your lane and the basket is down the hill hidden behind the trees in the middle. 220ish either lane.

Let's Build a NEW COURSE this Weekend!

Additional Work Day Details:

As you probably know, we will be breaking ground on our new course this weekend. We have a very busy couple of days planned and we wanted to thank you in advance for donating your time and effort to our new course!

We will begin work each day at 9am and work until a lunch break around noon. Lunch will be pizza/soda/water (BYO Beer) provided by Devens DGC. We will also have some water/gatoraid for during the day as well. We will resume work after lunch and work until around 5pm.

Meet in the usual parking lot and we will drive over to the work central area near new hole 3 (need trucks!)

If you show up late, you can follow the new path that leads to the existing course’s hole 4 tee and you will see us working in that area. This path begins after the fence on old hole 1 and meanders up below 2 & 3. Follow the sweet sounds of chainsaw! You can also call us on our cell phones – numbers below.

PICK UP TRUCKS

The focus of this weekend is to clear fairways.  We will go over the details of what should and should not be cleared on each hole before we begin.  During the day if you have questions, call Ken or Luke.  A few notes:

- Please cut everything LOW TO THE GROUND. I know it’s a little more difficult but its better than having to cut twice or having someone trip and get impaled.

- We will be looking to border walkways between holes using the thinner trees we cut.  

- Selected holes may use logs to mark a route from tee to green and also prevent hillside erosion.

- Cut material wants to be dragged well off the fairways and left in a natural deadfall state.  We are not looking to create large deadfall piles.  No burning allowed.

- We may collect some cuttings into road accessible areas for later chipping – use around green and walkways.

- The fairways are marked with red flags/tape.  We are cutting everything inside of the flags with the exception of trees with red tape. Most anything outside the flags will stay unless directed otherwise.  If it’s questionable, ask Ken or Luke.

- We will try to create level areas for tees, all natural for now.

We will be working on holes 1, 2, 3, 17 & 18. Once complete this will make a nice 9 hole loop using holes 1-4 of old course or 23 hole course using all 18 old holes! We plan on installing bucket targets and having these holes "playable" by the end of the weekend.

Ready to help install our new course? I hope so because our first work weekend will take place next weekend. We need multiple chainsaws and many workers to help cut and drag. Our goal is to cut the first 5 fairways (1, 2, 3, 17 & 18)

As I stated on Wednesday. Please do not move ANY cards on the hole assignment board. PLEASE just take the next card and accept your assigned starting hole (Even if its a far hole or you want to play with your buddy). Someone grabbed the #72 card (hole 9) card from the bottom of the board and replaced it in the middle somewhere. Any movement in the board causes a pretty big chain reaction and effects the whole course. I use the board to keep track of other things as well as using it to disperse players evenly amongst the course and this card change really screwed me up which in turns causes delays and then people leave and I end up with 25 tags at the end. Also, how fun would that one-some have been on hole 9? Thank you for your cooperation.

New Course Installation Preliminary Plans

Devens Players,

So fall is coming and the paperwork for the new 18 is nearly completed.  We are one small step away from approval to commence installation of the new 18 holes!   

We have set aside one weekend per month through the end of the year for workdays in order to allow everyone to participate in the effort.  I hope each of us can set aside at least a half-day each of those weekends to help.

The weekends are:

-       September 28th/29^th

-       October 19^th/20^th

-       November 16^th/17^th

-       December 7^th/8th

Half days are either mornings 9am – 12pm or afternoons 1pm – 4pm.  Devens will provide lunch and beverages for everyone.

The first workdays will focus on clearing fairways and paths between holes, grading tee pad areas and setting up temporary targets.  We will need people with chainsaws (2-4 per session would be great) and 2-4 people supporting each chainsaw to move brush and logs.   It would be good to have a 2-3 people with pick, shovel and rake available to rough out the tee areas.

Prior to the first work weekend we will post an announcement to ask people to sign up for times.  For now, please clear you schedules to allow some time to help us out.

We will also announce shortly hole sponsorships.  Like on the existing 18, you will have the opportunity to sponsor a hole and be recognized on that hole’s signage as a sponsor.  Total cost and number of people that can contribute per hole are being worked out.

For right now, please enjoy the rest of the NEFA season, Wednesday Devens league and casual play.  If we get a good volunteer effort this fall we could have baskets in the ground before the end of the year!!

Team Devens Kills it at Rindge!

Real good showing from Team Devens yesterday at the Rindge tournament!!

There were 27 people in AM1 and here is the lead card after round 1:

Frank and Alex held on to finish in the 1 and 2 spots!! AND John Buon aced hole 7 during the first round. He received $166 for his efforts

Coggshall Fall Fiasco Fundraising Tournament 9/22

There will be a fundraising event at Coggshall Park in Fitchburg with lunch included.  As you know, Coggshall is our sister course and the course really needs some help to get it to shine!  Please consider joining us for the tournament. 

All Am's will be $15 and Pro's $25. (Day of $3 additional fee)

$5 of every entry fee will be donated to the course. Additional fees include lunch (to be determined), insurance, sanctioning fees, and other assorted expenses.

The money will go into the course fund to help buy the necessary supplies for brick tee pads and other improvements.

Curtis Corner Playfields in South Kingstown

I got a message from Jimmy Blakeney who was an active member of the Devens DG community when he lived in Lowell.  Jimmy and his family moved to Rhode Island about 2 years ago and he is now trying to get a course created down there and has reached out to us for help.  I know we are asking for a lot of help locally as well but if you can afford the time or $$ please consider helping out!

COURSE WORK-DAYS:
Location:
301 Curtis Corner Rd, Wakefield, RI 02879 (Curtis Corner All Purpose Field)  Drive past tennis courts on your right and park in the next parking lot on the right.

We currently have TWO official work-days planned:

SEPTEMBER 21st (Saturday) - starting at 9am, we will clear the Phase 1 front nine of deadwood & debris and mark large rocks so that the SK Rec Dept crew can come in and bushhog the entire area and then spray with Round-Up to kill back any remaining vegetation & poison ivy.  We will also be moving deadfall wood to the edges where the SK Rec Dept crew will use a chipper and shoot the chips back into the playing area.  Please bring with you gloves, long pants, long sleeve shirts, bug spray and protective eyewear if you have it.  We also need several chainsaws, branch cutters, tree pruner, etc.

SEPTEMBER 28TH (Saturday) - starting at 9am,  This will be the follow-up to the mid-week heavy equipment mowing by SK Rec Dept.  We will use hand tools, chainsaws, tree pruner, etc to clear the areas they are unable to reach (around large rocks/trees, etc. Time permitting we will also begin to mark the tee pad/basket areas.

Another good turnout, I didn't expect it with the drop in start time but we still got 53 people!

We will start at 5:15 next week since we did OK with daylight. I have adjusted the card distribution to be 3 somes for the whole course before it jumps to foursomes so be prepared to walk to 7, 8 & 9 if we get up to 54 people.

Ned killed it with a 48 and John Buon continues his super hot play with a nice 51!

Vic also beat his personal best and got a 57, Fallon tied her PB with a 68!

For the team challenge tryouts it looks like everyone who wanted on the team got on! There is a pretty big battle between 6 or 7 players to see who will be in the alternate spots and who will be on the main team. Next week will be the last tryout and it will settle the spots. League Results: 8/21

With the Vibram Open festivities going on in Worcester we only had 44 players yesterday, still a good turnout and better than I expected! 5 of the top 6 players in A & B pools didn't come so that left to door for some of us lurkers to grab some good points. John Buon, Josh and I capitalized and there is now a 3 way tie for 3rd place in A Pool. 2nd place isn't too far out of reach either, GAME ON!

NEXT WEEK WE WILL START AT 5:15 SO PLEASE BE ON TIME. The first groups finished with enough light last night but for some reason there was a 40 minute difference between the first and last card in and 2 groups finished in the dark. Hopefully that was just a fluke.

Optional Speed Round Added to Doubles Tournament

We are adding the traditional speed round to our doubles event. Who's in?

Speed Round Details:

• Optional speed round will take place after doubles awards. $5 buy in (pay day of)
• Limited to 15 players
• We will use the previous 4 hole loop (13, 14, 15 tee to 9 basket & 10.. Finish line on at hole 11 tee.
• Players will go off in 1 minute intervals.
• 15 second bonus for each stroke under par (12)
• 15 second penalty for each stroke over par (12)
• Will need 4 volunteer spotters
• Will need a few volunteer timekeepers
• Lowest Adjusted time wins!

PS - In my research of the speed round I noticed that there have already been 2 or 3 Thrills on the Hill.. Oooopps!

Thrill on the Hill 2 is SOLD OUT!

The Thrill on the Hill 2 sold out in record time!

Tournaments at the hill have been selling out at a faster and faster pace. Last year the Fools on the Hill tournament sold out in 3 weeks. Earlier this year the Hill Yeah Spring Classic sold out in 3 days and this doubles event sold out in just under 28 hours, pretty awesome!

Looks like we are putting in that new course at just the right time!  If we get lots of help putting it in maybe we will be ready for a 2 day or 144 player event later next summer.

Devens Disc Golf to Open SECOND Course!

It’s official. Devens Disc Golf is approved to move forward with installation of an additional 18 holes adjacent to the current course. This new course will offer longer holes with much of the same variety of terrain. It will play across the hill on the eastern side of Shepley’s Hill behind hole 6 and circle around to close to hole 12’s basket before returning to hole 4.

We approached Devens back in April with this concept. At the time, the land on Shepley’s Hill was transitioning from Mass Development Open Space to Devens land under a conservation restriction (CR). Our timing was excellent because the CR language was not finalized and could be amended to allow the installation and operation of a new course to occur. One primary concern of the Devens Enterprise Commission (DEC, the agency responsible for managing the land use in Devens), was the environmental impact around the Certified Vernal Pool behind hole six, as well as numerous other vernal pools at the top of Shepley’s.

The course layout was set to ensure sufficient setback from the vernal pool and use of an existing tank road to minimize impact. Vernal pools will be an area of ongoing sensitivity. We will rope those areas off and treat them as unplayable (or OB) to reduce any potential impact. Stay tuned for some additional educational materials on vernal pools. Our respect and proper treatment of those areas will ensure our continued access to this land for disc golf.

Based on a course design that minimized any impact on vernal pools, it was recommended that we could move forward without the need for a more complete environmental impact determination by the state. At a meeting of the DEC on Aug. 8th, that recommendation was approved, and pending some additional paperwork (update of our current lease – yes Devens Disc Golf leases the land from Mass Development), we are set to go.

This process went as smoothly as it did because Devens sees the success and growth of our course and the respect of its players for maintaining the land. The Devens Master Plan sought to utilize its open space for “passive recreation” and although disc golf is not zero impact, it is an activity that draws a wide range of participants and keeps the land in a natural state.

It’s now up to us to continue to be responsible managers of the land and continue to enjoy what we are about to build together. Stay tuned for more details on work days and basket sponsorships.
