League Results 8/28 & Team Challenge Tryout/Practice Info

Another good turnout, I didn't expect it with the drop in start time but we still got 53 people!

We will start at 5:15 next week since we did OK with daylight. I have adjusted the card distribution to be 3 somes for the whole course before it jumps to foursomes so be prepared to walk to 7, 8 & 9 if we get up to 54 people.

Ned killed it with a 48 and John Buon continues his super hot play with a nice 51!

Vic also beat his personal best and got a 57, Fallon tied her PB with a 68!

Only 7 tags left so grab yours before they are gone. You don't want to miss the end of the league tournament (and any end of the year payouts) because you didn't buy a tag, do ya?

We are selling Devens Tshirts for $20 and Hill Yeah Spring Classic Tournament Buzzzes for $15. Please support Devens Disc Golf & the sport in general. We are working on some great ways to make this additional fundraising money help to grow the sport. We have started our contributions by purchasing a basket for the NEW Otter Brook DGC in Keene, NH.

Thank you to all of you who have contributed to the new donation pipe, everyone has been very generous so far and each donation brings us closer to our future goals!

Team Challenge Tryouts:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/fmjv670rs2yr26t/TC2.pdf

For the team challenge tryouts it looks like everyone who wanted on the team got on! There is a pretty big battle between 6 or 7 players to see who will be in the alternate spots and who will be on the main team. Next week will be the last tryout and it will settle the spots. Those of you in the 62-64 average range should show up and kill it next week if you want to make the core team. I NEED EMAIL addresses and phone # from everyone on this list. Please email the info to devensdiscgolf@gmail.com

There will be team practice on Sunday September 15th at 10am and everyone pretty much needs to come if they can... Won't take too long, team challenge rules and at least a 9 hole match play demo.. I could use a few members of Team Devens to help with the match play portion

Nick, Aaron & Josh.. We need to get together some night soon to go over everything. I submitted your team to the league commish so your schedule should be out in a few weeks. I'll submit your roster after next week.

League Results: 8/21

With the Vibram Open festivities going on in Worcester we only had 44 players yesterday, still a good turnout and better than I expected! 5 of the top 6 players in A & B pools didn't come so that left to door for some of us lurkers to grab some good points. John Buon, Josh and I capitalized and there is now a 3 way tie for 3rd place in A Pool. 2nd place isn't too far out of reach either, GAME ON!

Jacki Bogan shoots a nice 70 for her personal best!

NEXT WEEK WE WILL START AT 5:15 SO PLEASE BE ON TIME. The first groups finished with enough light last night but for some reason there was a 40 minute difference between the first and last card in and 2 groups finished in the dark. Hopefully that was just a fluke.

Only 6 tags left so grab yours before they are gone. You don't want to miss the end of the league tournament (and any end of the year payouts) because you didn't buy a tag, do ya?

Thrill on the Hill 2 is SOLD OUT!

The Thrill on the Hill 2 sold out in record time!

Tournaments at the hill have been selling out at a faster and faster pace. Last year the Fools on the Hill tournament sold out in 3 weeks. Earlier this year the Hill Yeah Spring Classic sold out in 3 days and this doubles event sold out in just under 28 hours, pretty awesome!

Looks like we are putting in that new course at just the right time!  If we get lots of help putting it in maybe we will be ready for a 2 day or 144 player event later next summer.

If you still want to play you should sign up for the wait list. You can do so here:

Devens Disc Golf to Open SECOND Course!

From Ken Gary:

It’s official. Devens Disc Golf is approved to move forward with installation of an additional 18 holes adjacent to the current course. This new course will offer longer holes with much of the same variety of terrain. It will play across the hill on the eastern side of Shepley’s Hill behind hole 6 and circle around to close to hole 12’s basket before returning to hole 4.

We approached Devens back in April with this concept. At the time, the land on Shepley’s Hill was transitioning from Mass Development Open Space to Devens land under a conservation restriction (CR). Our timing was excellent because the CR language was not finalized and could be amended to allow the installation and operation of a new course to occur. One primary concern of the Devens Enterprise Commission (DEC, the agency responsible for managing the land use in Devens), was the environmental impact around the Certified Vernal Pool behind hole six, as well as numerous other vernal pools at the top of Shepley’s.

The course layout was set to ensure sufficient setback from the vernal pool and use of an existing tank road to minimize impact. Vernal pools will be an area of ongoing sensitivity. We will rope those areas off and treat them as unplayable (or OB) to reduce any potential impact. Stay tuned for some additional educational materials on vernal pools. Our respect and proper treatment of those areas will ensure our continued access to this land for disc golf.

Based on a course design that minimized any impact on vernal pools, it was recommended that we could move forward without the need for a more complete environmental impact determination by the state. At a meeting of the DEC on Aug. 8th, that recommendation was approved, and pending some additional paperwork (update of our current lease – yes Devens Disc Golf leases the land from Mass Development), we are set to go.

This process went as smoothly as it did because Devens sees the success and growth of our course and the respect of its players for maintaining the land. The Devens Master Plan sought to utilize its open space for “passive recreation” and although disc golf is not zero impact, it is an activity that draws a wide range of participants and keeps the land in a natural state.

It’s now up to us to continue to be responsible managers of the land and continue to enjoy what we are about to build together. Stay tuned for more details on work days and basket sponsorships.

Join us for a walk of the new land this Sunday morning at 9:30am!

Here is a view of the proposed layout -

League Results 8/14

Same old story - Incredible weather, huge turnout, fun times! It's becoming redundant and I am loving it!

We got a visit from Timmay Walsh which was really nice! He almost got away with the win as well =)

We really appreciate everyone showing up early for the presentation by Neil Angus of the DEC. Neil formally APPROVED our plans to create a SECOND course on the hill! It will be a completely separate and unique course. Ken Gary has been busting his ass and everyone should thank him. Good job getting it done Ken and thank you to our core group of players who keep the course clean and in good shape!  If there were any issues at all with the current course the result would have likely been different. I am sure Ken will be posting all of the details very soon pertaining to hole sponsorships, layout evaluation, etc. Can't wait to see how this unfolds.

Sunday - Aug 18 - Potential New Course Walk Through

Anyone up for a walk in the woods this Sunday?

We are looking at adding a second 18 hole course at Devens, potentially beginning work this fall.  This new course will be adjacent to the current course.  We have a preliminary layout sketched out.  We will be walking the new layout this Sunday, Aug. 18th in case anyone would like to see the land and course layout.  Input on design is welcome.  We will meet in the parking lot at 9:30am.  Singles or doubles may follow.

League 8/14 Cooperation

On Wednesday 8/14, please arrive before 5:15 if at all possible. We will be having a quick presentation at that time and it would be great if everyone was there for it.

I know we like to have a little fun and drinks some beers responsibly and stuff but if that can be held off during this time that would be fantastic as well.

If you sign in early and head out to play a few holes please do come back to the parking lot at that time.

Thanks for your cooperation.

August 7th League Results

Another perfect night for league and we finally got back up to the high 50's for players, 57 to be exact! All sorts of excitement too!

To add to the excitement. Most of the people came within the last 10 minutes and what a puzzle everything turned out to be. I was short a tag but had some to substitute so I think it turned out OK. Let me know if you have 2 tags or some other oddity.

5 new players came out.

2 ACES! John Buonsanto hit hole 17 and Ned Eisenberg hit hole 9. Nice shots! They split $124 bucks.

A couple of personal best scores too. Marc Duci (moving to A pool) shot a smoking 51 and Aaron Stewart shot a steady 55!

Only 8 tags left so grab yours before they are gone. You don't want to miss the end of the league tournament (and any end of the year payouts) because you didn't buy a tag, do ya?

Local Player Spotlight: Scott Wilson

Watch out for Scott Wilson everyone!  He has been playing for only 3 months and has been steadily improving.

I played a round with Ken Gary and Scott tonight and Scott shot a 58 to beat his personal best by 3 strokes!

Keep it up!

Devens Tip Line

Just got a hot tip on the idiots who rolled our nice tables down the hill.

Someone was waiting in the parking lot for a buddy when 2 guys in their early 20s driving a late model gray pontiac grand am arrived and headed out onto the course to play. The friend arrived and they went out onto the course and they were about 3-4 holes behind the 2 young guys. They heard a loud crash and when they finished hole 9 they noticed what had happened. The people who rolled the tables were nowhere to be found and they think they played through 9 then rolled the tables on 10 and 13 on their way out.

Anyone know a disc golfer that fits this description? If so, maybe you can encourage them to come to a future workday so they can understand the amount of work that goes into a course for their enjoyment...

Luke
